Perry Named Interim Chair
of MSU Hort Department

Ron Perry, who is currently Michigan State University Extension specialist in tree fruit, has added another job to his list of responsibilities – interim Department of Horticulture chairman.

Perry officially began his duties Oct. 16. He will fill in until a successor is selected to former chairman Wayne Loescher, who had been chairman since 1990. Loescher has accepted a new assignment, where half his time will be spent as associate dean for graduate studies in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the other half conducting technical research in the Department of Horticulture. His research will specialize in plant physiology with emphasis on carbon mobilization and translocation.

Perry said the exact title and duration of his service has not yet been determined. He added that the hort department faculty has expressed a desire to proceed with a search that would include both internal and external candidates. He does not know whether he will become a candidate for the permanent position.

Perry joined the department Aug. 1, 1980. Before taking the interim chairman position, his appointment was 50% research and 50% Extension. His primary research interests include rootstock evaluation of tree fruit, IPM for apples and perennial root systems as they relate to soil dynamics. Extension programming includes coordinating the MSU Tree Fruit School and serving as a technical resource for meetings and workshops in areas such as rootstocks, high-density management systems, tree training, soil problems and nursery/propagation work.

Perry earned his bachelor of science degree in fruit science from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo in 1968, a master of agriculture in horticulture from Texas A&M in 1975 and a doctorate in horticulture from A&M in 1980.
