Mint Producers Vote
to Discontinue Program

Michigan’s mint producers have voted to discontinue the Michigan Mint Research and Development Program, according to Dan Wyant, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA).

The program was being considered for an additional five years beginning July 1 and ending June 30. A total of 11 ballots were received in the referendum conducted by MDA from June 26 through July 7. Of the ballots received, three were disqualified because they were incomplete. Of the valid eight remaining referendum ballots, four voted yes - representing 26,377 pounds of mint oil, and four voted no - representing 67,536.2 pounds of mint oil, to continue the program.

The law (Public Act 232 of 1965) requires that more than 50% of the voting producers, representing over 50% of the pounds sold by those voting, must approve the referendum for passage.
